Teaching Spanish is kind of difficult. Explaining grammar with so many exceptions and word structure so different from English, German or Chinese. What about vocabulary? Vocabulary in Spanish is vast and there are many words for the same meaning. Thankfully online activities can make our life as a Spanish teacher easier. And with the Covid Era we have discovered a little bit more about them, and discovered a little bit more how online activities in the Spanish classroom can make teacher's life simpler, and students' as well. In this post I would like to give you some of my recommendations for creating online activities in Spanish. These recommendations will engage your students and you too into what you are teaching, because online activities can achieve what paper can't, a world of possibilites!
1) Create links to other resources
This is the most important tip to create online resources for me. Linking! Online activities do not have to be plain and static. A single link can expand the curiosity and knowledge of students. Link/take students to a video or a link to a new Spanish resource that you use. Share with them and the world your own point of view and resources you have found along your teacher path.
2)Do not understimate the power of pictures
Pictures say 1000 words or the saying goes like that. In other words, make it visual! Do not put one thousand words in a document when you can explain it with a single picture. A picture can create opportunities for reactions and that translates into speaking or writing exercises that you can do via Zoom, google meets, etc.
3)Take advantage of the free stuff. Spend time learning how to make engaging online activities for free!
You need to spend time learning how to make online activities for free. And the knowledge is out there on youtube, blogs, internet! Go out there and learn. There are so many youtube channels that offer informations about how to create online activities here I give you here the name of my favorite youtuber teacher and online resource maker, but you can kee adding:
He has helped so much in my classes with his tips of teacher technology. He is the best out there.
4) Use online resources that are ready to use
I admit it. Sometimes the life of a teacher is a never ending rain of responsabilities and we barely have the time to sit down and create something for our students. That can be solved by using resources other teachers with a little bt more flexible schedule are creating. Teacher's pay teachers is one of the places that can actually help make your classes more engaging when you are online. Thankfully I have had the chance to create some online resources for my Spanish classroom when the school where I worked had to switch to online learning. These resources that I had to create myself because I did not find them anywhere else, really helped my classes then and now that I keep using them. I learnt that online resources could actually increase my students engagement and grade tests and quizzes for me! You can check out some of the online Spanish engaging activities that I created for my classroom here:
